A toxin painted onto floor joists of new homes in Colorado is at the center of a lawsuit filed last week in Weld District Court. A Denver attorney, on behalf of two Firestone families, sued Seattle-based Weyerhaeuser Company for distributing floor joists coated with a formaldehyde-based resin.

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – The lawsuits are starting to flow from new homebuyers over a problem with a potentially dangerous chemical that was intended as a safety measure in the houses. A formula was changed in fire retardant placed on joists that support the floor manufactured by Weyerhaeuser, which now contains formaldehyde.

Lawsuits filed over formaldehyde leaking into new homes

DENVER – When a new home is built, buyers expect the best. But there are a number of homes in Colorado causing the worst, according to attorney Mark Nelson. “A pungent smell that irritates the eyes, nose, and throat,” Nelson said. “It’s apparent to anyone who goes into one of those basements, particularly basements that are unfinished.”
